
I’m not a feminist. Well, I don’t consider myself one. I’m not really sure I fully understand what it means to be one. If I were to become a feminist I think it would be a lifestyle change. Many things I’m used to doing, thinking, feeling and saying are probably frowned upon where feminism is concerned. But one thing I DO know I am is a woman. I’ve been fully accepting of the way hip hop objectifies women since I was old enough to understand that it’s more about business now and less about self expression. These men aren’t expressing themselves. They’re expressing an image. They’re telling you what marketing professionals and industry powers want them to in order to sell records. They are puppets. Very seldom will you find a profitable rapper that actually treats women the way he says he does in his songs. Many of them have wives that they treat like gold. Don’t believe the hype. What I’m not totally sure of anymore is if I’m still accepting of it. I was a teenager back then. I’m knocking on 30 now. I see and feel things differently.
